Newsletter

Welcome to the quilter’s rest’s updates and newsletter!                                #14    February, 2010

Congratulations! We’ve made it into a new decade – ladies from The Quilter’s Rest have decided to make this year a UFO year – clear out all the old projects and bring in the new! AND it’s already working with project after project being brought out of the woodwork and finishing touches added – what a great sense of achievement! This year promises to be as busy as ever with events being planned. PFAFF are releasing 2 new overlockers tomorrow and our open day is just around the corner.

The Bushies’ High Tea and Charity Quilt Auction was held on 6th Feb and was a huge success raising just under $6700 in a matter of hours. We were supported by a great team of people so the afternoon/evening flowed smoothly with High Tea served including billy tea in pannikins. Everyone was issued a pannikin on entry, each with a bidders number underneath. There was live entertainment with button accordions, mouth organs, bush poetry and whip cracking – what a vast array of talent. But the highlight came with the quilt auction. 33 items were auctioned, from cushions to table runners, cot quilts to king size quilts. Bidding was furious with everyone joining in with the spirit of the evening. Interval saw fresh damper and syrup being served and more billy tea…. Even though the sun had gone down by the completion of the auction, there wasn’t a person whose spirits hadn’t been lifted by such a wonderful atmosphere. Thanks to all who donated for the event. We have been notified that Meals on Wheels will be putting in a badly needed coldroom thanks to your generous support. Good on you…..

Come To Where The Quilters’ Rest – Open Day is on 10th April. Included with this newsletter is the flyer with details on the back. These include the challenge – Potholder with Attitude in both junior and senior sections; a postcard challenge – Quilter’s Paradise and the usual inchies swap. There will be a quilt sandwiching competition and already we have 4 teams nominated, one of which has never sandwiched quilts before! The displays will be continuing throughout the day and the feature will be the Guest Speaker followed by Show and Tell. A great day’s entertainment and opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones. We’d love to see you here….

Tamalba News – Life has been busy with the rain and Al is constantly mowing, but the place is looking a picture. The cows are very content, each carrying a new calf for the season. Nathan and Nina are growing each time we see them. What a wonderful trip it is being a grandparent! Speaking of enjoyment, make this the year you come and visit. Book in for a weekend stay or bring your quilting group for free morning tea - stay and shop or just stay and enjoy the scenery. We’d love to see you soon….

Inchies Swap
Come along armed with as many Inchies as you can carry – What are Inchies, you say. Well, an Inchie is a tiny piece of art between 1 and 1½inches square, made of fabric, embellished and backed with your initials on the back. This was a huge success the last 2 open days. There is no theme for these little beauties, just do your own thing and watch and wait for the Inchie Bug to Bite YOU!!! The swap will take place on the day, and you will only be included if you have Inchies to swap. Swapping will be at random, but you will get as many Inchies back as you put in. So be a part of this contagious trading and start making Inchies now!

Quilt Sandwiching Competition
The main idea of this is to have great fun with a group of your friends. Make up a special name for your Team and nominate on form below.  Each team has a quilt top which has to be sandwiched from start to finish. Past years winners and participants are encouraged to go all out to make this competition more outrageous than usual!

Rules for the Quilt Sandwiching competition
1.        The quilt top may be no smaller than 48” x 60”.
2.       Quilt Top, Wadding and Backing to be provided by the team competing.
3.       No more than 4 persons in any one team. Team members need not necessarily belong to one patchwork group. Each team must have a name eg. The Pin Ups or Fantastic Four etc.
4.       Clips, safety pins (no straight pins), thread and needle may be used, but no basting spray.
5.       A table will be provided for each team.
6.       Quilt must be sandwiched without wrinkles and be held firmly together with either safety pins or thread – ready for quilting; and have the judges approval on completion of sandwiching.
7.       Judges decision will be final but not necessarily correct.
